President’s Message – May 2017

May and June are very busy months for me. Mike and I are going to Hamilton, Montana for the NW Federation Show. Our club newsletter (Keith Morgan) and website (Mark Hohn) have been entered into the NW Federation contest. Also Bob Pattie has been nominated for “Rockhound of the Year.” These Federation Shows are large shows and always so much fun plus you get to see rocks and gems that don’t usually appear at shows in our area. This show is going to be exceptionally exciting to see if our club wins any of these entries.

Right after we get back from Montana, I have a booth at the Puyallup Rock & Gem Show.

Then hopefully, 3 days after the Puyallup Show we are off the Ventura, CA for the American Federation Show. If our club wins any of the NW Federation awards they are automatically entered into the American Federation Show contest. It would be fantastic if any of our entries make it to the American Federation Show.

I am also putting in a display case at the West Seattle Show and the Montana Show. Also entering my work in the Enumclaw County Fair and The Puyallup State Fair. Plus somewhere between now and the first weekend of June I have to do some major wire wrapping so that I have items to sell at the Puyallup Rock & Gem Show. Plan speakers for the May, June and July general meetings and start a wire wrapping class. Then to fill up my calendar further, from now to 3 days before we leave for Montana I am house/pet sitting.

Whew – I get tired just typing this up.

The Board is in the process of making arrangements to get rid of our storage locker. Our club budget can no longer meet the annual cost of this unit. We will again be selling buckets of rocks plus rock specimens and used lapidary equipment at the Puyallup Rock & Gem Show.

Our club is doing good. Our membership is at the highest it has been in many years!

It is very important that all our members spread the word about our club. We need to continuously get new members because there is always a certain number of people that don’t renew each year. Our new website has been very successful in reaching out to prospective members. It gets a steady stream of inquires. Then I commit to the Gem Fairs and the Puyallup Fair in order to further spread the word about our Kent club. Please put on your calendar to volunteer at our info booth in the month of September at the Puyallup Fair. Then the next Gem Faire is November 10th to 12th.
