Digging It!

Thanks to everyone who joined us in March for Maureen Carlisle’s fascinating look at the world of professional paleontology digs. Our next meeting on April 9 is a great club tradition: Rock Bingo!
Whether you’ve been a member for decades or you just joined last month, Bingo is the ultimate fun night for everyone kids included. All you have to do is bring three rock-related gifts (rocks themselves are just fine!), wrapped so that they are hidden, and then show up at 7pm on the 9th. Everyone is a winner – win a new treasure for your shelf and get to know the people around you, so you can find your next rockhounding buddy.
As we shift into April, more of us will be getting outside to do our own digs – and I couldn’t be more excited. The weather is finally moving into sweet spot territory – not too cold, not too hot – so it’s time to get out there. On April 19, we’re heading to Swift Creek in search of the legendary Baker Blues and local jasper. This is a beautiful, quiet spot near Baker Lake which is an easier drive – no high clearance required – and the physical exertion involved requires pulling the material up the hillside from the creek to your car. For the best pickings, bring waders or waterproof boots, a gem scoop or rake, something to carry your rocks in, and a shovel. Roger Danneman will be sending out final information on April field trips soon.
