May 11th 2024 Field Trip to First Creek (agate, crystals, geodes)

On May 11th 2024, we will be going to First Creek which is east of Cle Elum and part of the Teanaway formation.  Meet 9:30 AM in the Cle Elum Safeway parking lot near the gas pumps (exit 84 – 702 W 1st St, Cle Elum), about 1.5 hour drive from Renton.  We’ll leave there at 9:45, head east on Hwy 970, and park at the First Creek parking area (about 10 miles away – just 1/2 mile north of 97/970 junction).

Group will leave from the First Creek parking lot about 10:15 AM!

Agates, Jasper, Geodes, and Crystal – Bring digging and hard rock tools, buckets, and sturdy shoes. Appropriate clothing for weather, lunch, drinking water and snacks.  Bug spray for ticks.  This is a 2-mile hike on a logging road with 5 moderate ups and downs and there could still be snow and/or mud on the trail in May.  A wagon or jogging cart is handy for carrying tools and material.

Presidents Message

  • From the Top of the Rock Pile .   .   .   .   . Planning for our Gem Show is well underway. I took on the position since no one volunteered to be the Show Coordinator. I am determined to keep our show from falling to the wayside because no one is interested in volunteering for the position. I give a lot of kudos to Mark Hohn for getting our show off the ground again in 2018. What Mark restarted is now a successful show every year and has grown year after year. Last year, Chris Vitellaro put together a great show

Meeting Announcements

  • Topic: Out-of-state rockhounding sites by Roger Danneman Oregon, Utah, Idaho, Montana, etc. – So many rockhounding places! We have a few members who have combined a road trip vacation and rockhounding that will collaborate on this. It’s interesting to see the variety of material from these areas. After this meeting, you may want to plan a road trip too! Show ‘n Tell: Show us something you have found or bought on a road trip.

  • April 11th – Rock Bingo (Spring Break) and Food Drive This meeting is our annual “Rock Bingo” night. It is held during spring break so our Young Tumblers and their friends can attend without worrying about school the next day. Each member is asked to bring 3 wrapped items for each person who intends to play Bingo. You can play up to 3 games in person, and every person goes home a winner. Please try to donate an item you would like to receive, not junk slabs and rocks. Let’s all plan to have a fun evening together. Guests are welcome, and we encourage our Young Tumblers to bring their friends. Food Drive – We are collecting food for the Kent Food again. Try to donate 1 item or more for every person playing Bingo.
